Cross Country Skiing in Estes Park
One way to beat the crowds at the downhill ski areas is some Estes Park cross-country skiing! For half the year, the glorious and extraordinary terrain of Rocky Mountain National Park offers many incredible outdoor experiences for cross-country skiers. Moderate to deep snow fills most high valleys from December into May, and skiable spring snow covers much of the tundra throughout the winter months. The snow is usually a dry powder through March, and many winter days are clear.
Don’t have your equipment with you? Stop by the Estes Park Mountain Shop to get set up with a Cross Country Ski Package. Ask them for the day’s recommendations, or check in at the park’s Visitor Center. Dedicated cross-country skiers should also look up Eldora Mountain Resort, which has 40 kilometers of trails dedicated solely to this activity. Eldora is located in Nederland, CO, under an hour and a half’s drive from Estes Park.
For the best experience, always wear goggles or sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen when heading out on the winter trails—snow can reflect more light than you may expect. We hope you have a great time exploring Estes Park in the winter months!
