Wondering what to do in Estes Park at night? Don’t worry the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down in our little mountain town. So, we’ve gathered up a list of our favorite activities and places to go to have a good time!

Visit Rocky Mountain National Park

Yes, that’s right Rocky Mountain National Park is open at night. In fact, the park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (weather permitting)! One of the best reasons to visit at night would be to catch a full moon rise over the Rockies or pull out your telescope and stare up at the blanket of stars. And on a really clear night, the Milky Way. Visiting at night is a unique way to see the park, especially with the moon and stars guiding the way.

The Wheel Bar

A long-standing tradition in Estes Park is to grab a drink at The Wheel Bar. Located in the heart of town, The Wheel Bar has been serving locals and travelers alike since 1945! Still a family-run business, it’s the place where you come in a stranger and leave feeling like family.

Live music at The Barrel

Another fun spot for nightlife fun in Estes Park is to catch some live music at The Barrel. In addition to their constant flood of live music, they also host a variety of events throughout the year. On a beautiful night (or day), enjoy music, food, and drinks in the beer garden for a night to remember.

Historic Stanley Night Tour

Visit one of the most iconic landmarks in Estes Park with the historic Stanley Night Tour. Immerse yourself in the history of The Stanley Hotel after dark with a 60-minute walking tour that takes you through the mysterious secrets and spirited tales of the hotel. Advance tickets are required.

Avant-Garde Aleworks

Whether it’s date night or during the day, stop in at the Avant Garde Aleworks. This hip new brewery in town not only pours some great tasting beers, but they are also home to arguably the best outdoor patio in Estes Park. Join them for Taproom Trivia every Thursday at 6:00 pm or yoga on the patio in the summer. It’s a truly refreshing place to enjoy some local brews using that fresh Rocky Mountain water.

Be sure to also visit these other Estes Park breweries.

Snowy Peaks Winery

If beer isn’t your thing, stop in at the Snowy Peaks Winery, Estes Park’s only winery. Their selection of whites, roses, reds, and dessert wines make sure there is something for everyone.  A family-friendly place to visit, Snowy Peaks also offers a children’s room with toys, games, and juice tastings. Buy a bottle or two for a picnic at Rocky Mountain National Park or bring it back to your romantic cabin from Rocky Mountain Resorts!

Relax by the fire or in a hut tub

One of the best ways to enjoy Estes Park at night is with a good book, a glass of wine or beer, and good stories, curled up by the fire or soaking in a relaxing hot tub. You can do just that with a stay at Rocky Mountain Resorts. Many of our vacation rentals feature a warming fireplace, private hot tub, and of course scenic views of Estes Park.

Discover our cabins with a private hot tub, cabins with a fireplace, or even accommodations with a whirlpool tub. Either way, an evening of relaxation isn’t far away when booking one of our Estess Park lodging options.

Visiting this winter? Be sure to take advantage of our winter special for the best rates possible!

While there are many events in Estes Park worth attending we particularly love the Whisky Warm Up. With beautiful fresh mountain air, whisky tastings, and live music there are many reasons why you should attend the Whisky Warm Up this winter!

*Do note, due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19 events are subject to change.

But first… a little bit about the Whisky Warm Up

The Estes Park Whisky Warm Up all started in 2018 to help showcase Colorado’s homegrown whisky distilleries and a few of our locally grown distillers. Held in winter, the event captures a Colorado tradition of warming up from the inside out! Easily sip and sample the finest selections of Colorado whiskys paired with delightful treats, all while listening to live music and shopping from area vendors.

It’s held outside

That’s right, this winter event is held outside! Here in Colorado, we think (well most things) should be celebrated outdoors amongst the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Plus, with the event being held outside you can attend at your own comfort level, no matter what health concerns you might have. Be sure to dress for the weather, we may have a warm 60-degree day or a cold 20-degree day in March!

Taste from a variety of distilleries

Taste from over 20 local distilleries including Black Bear Distillery, Spirits of the Rockies, and our very own Elkins Distillery and the Estes Park Distilling Co. Plus, if you liked what you tasted, there will be an opportunity at the end of the event to purchase a bottle from your favorite distillery to enjoy at home or in your Rocky Mountain Resorts cabin.

Live entertainment

One of the best reasons to attend the Whisky Warm Up is for the live entertainment. This year the event features the vocal talents of David Zollo from High and Lonesome and The Body Electric. The music is a blend between boogie, blues, honky-tonk, and a good time for all.

Details:

This event has limited tickets and sells out quickly.

Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park in winter is a great time to explore the area trails. With fewer crowds, blankets of snow, and snow-capped peaks, hikers enjoy the solitude and quiet beauty that comes with the season. But we get it, it’s cold out there, so we’ve rounded up a few trails that can be completed in a short amount of time. Jumpstart your adventures, with these winter hikes in Estes Park in under two hours.

*note all times are approximate. Based on a two-mile-an-hour pace.

Lake Estes Trail

Duration: 1.5 – 2 hours

The flat 3.73-mile trail that follows the perimeter of Lake Estes is a great option for an easy winter hike. Located in town and with little to no elevation gain, it feels more like a stroll than a strenuous hike. Take it as slow as you want and allow for time to admire the local wildlife. Or lace up your running shoes for a quick lap or two around the lake. If the snow is really deep, snowshoes are a great option.

Kruger Rock Trail

Duration: 2 hours

The Hermit Park Open Space, just outside of town, features access to one of the area’s most popular trails, the hike to Kruger Rock. The four-mile loop leads you to the top of Kruger Rock where sweeping views of Mount Meeker, Longs Peak, and the Continental Divide can be seen. With an elevation gain of 977 feet, the trail is rated moderate with a challenging scramble near the top.

In Rocky Mountain National Park

The trails below are located inside Rocky Mountain National Park, but are only a handful of miles from the Beaver Meadows Entrance, making them easy day-hikes from town.

Sprague Lake

Duration: under 1 hour

Probably one of our favorite winter hikes in Estes Park is Sprague Lake. Ideal for hiking any time of the year, the winter is especially special with the frozen-over lake, snow-capped peaks, and bare trees allowing for never-ending views. Take in stunning views across the lake of the park’s most notable peaks; Hallett, Taylor, Otis, Halfmountain, and more. The loop around The trail is just under one mile around the lake and is accessed via Bear Lake Road.

Cub Lake

Duration: 2 hours

Beginning from the Morraine Park area as well, Cub Lake is a four-mile hike that is perfect for winter hikes due to its mild terrain. Hikers will enjoy views of the Big Thompson River, glacial landscapes, and snow-capped mountain peaks. Plus, following the western edge of Morraine Park, there are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

Gem Lake

Duration: 1.5 – 2 hours

Located about three miles from downtown Estes Park, Gem Lake trailhead is found along Devils Gulch Road in RMNP. The 3.4-mile trail offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the park. The initial gradual ascent up Lumpy Ridge is marked by bare aspen groves in the winter and giant rock formations.

The final ascent to the lake is steep, quickly adding to the 1,000 feet in vertical elevation gain. But trust us, the views are well worth it!

Upper Beaver Meadows

Duration: 2 hours

The Upper Beaver Meadows trail is located just a couple of miles from the Beaver Meadows Park entrance. The five-mile loop trail winds through a forest of pine trees, over rushing streams (frozen in winter), and expansive meadows where you can enjoy great views of Longs Peak and the Continental Divide. Keep your eye out for local wildlife such as deer and elk burrowed in the deep snow. With an elevation gain of around 1,000 feet, you’ll need to move fast to complete in under two hours.

Looking for a bit more of a challenge? Then check out these challenging snowshoe hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park.
