Estes Park may not be known as a ski resort town, but we do provide a gateway to some of the best local skiing in the state. While down-hill might be the most popular form, skiing near Estes Park offers many different options for ski enthusiasts. Whether it’s backcountry or cross-country skiing, the possibilities are endless. So, grab your gear and enjoy one of these skiing adventures near Estes Park.
Eldora Ski Resort
For fantastic down-hill skiing head out to Eldora Ski Resort. Located just 47 miles south of Estes Park, roughly an hour and 15-minute drive, this ski resort is a popular day excursion from Estes Park. The resort caters to individual and family skiers alike with rentals, lessons, and groomed slopes. This intimate ski resort is a local favorite without the major crowds that visit nearby ski resorts like Breckenridge. Visitors can buy a day pass; resort season passes or gain access through the Ikon pass.
Backcountry skiing
For those who are looking for more of a challenge and who are wanting to earn that hot chocolate at the end of the day, skiing near Estes Park offers great backcountry opportunities. For the more advanced, technical skier, skiing in Rocky Mountain National Park offers some of the best backcountry skiing and boarding around. If this is your first time heading out to the backcountry it is advised to sign up for avalanche training and join a guided excursion.
Rocky Mountain National Park opened their own Avalanche Beacon Training Park in Hidden Valley where backcountry enthusiasts can practice simulated avalanche searches.
Hidden Valley
While the Hidden Valley ski area has closed, it’s an iconic playground for those seeking the pristine powder of the backcountry. If you are willing to put in a little extra effort, skiers can “skin up” to the top for the perfect run. The 1,200 acres of skiable diverse terrain offers many options for beginners and intermediate backcountry skiers.
Similar terrain can be found on the peaks around Bear Lake. Plan for a serious hike up to hit popular runs like The Drift, Ptarmigan Glacier, and North Bowl.
Cross-country skiing
Rocky Mountain National Park also offers ample opportunities for cross-country skiing with its several valley floors that lend themselves to this popular activity. The Kawuneeche Valley provides flat terrain with plenty of snow, the idyllic conditions for cross-country skiing. Sprague Lake and Bear Lake are also good options for beginners.
A ski rental shop is available in downtown Estes Park and is happy to outfit you with the necessary equipment for your skiing adventures near Estes Park.
