While it might not be an obvious choice to visit a chapel during your Estes Park vacation, a visit to Chapel on the Rock is a must-see for anyone touring the area. This iconic landmark draws in locals and tourists alike from around the world wanting to capture their best photo of their favorite mountain chapel.

Located 12 miles south of Estes Park in Allenspark, CO rests a stoic chapel perched atop a sacred rock for all to see. For nearly 85 years the Chapel on the Rock at Camp St. Malo has stood the test of time and survived weather hardships such as fires and flood. Chapel on the Rock is not only set in a beautiful landscape with majestic mountain peaks as the backdrop and dense forest softening the landscape, but it is also a stunning representation of elaborate stonework and craftsmanship. Once you visit it is easy to see why it is one of the most visited chapels.

History

A religious man by the name of Monsignor Joseph Bosetti happened upon a large rock just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park when searching for a falling star. Taking it as a sign from God, he began plans for building the St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, known today as Chapel on the Rock.

Visiting today

Today, after several transformations, Chapel on the Rock serves as a religious retreat and conference center. The chapel is open for visitors Tuesday-Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Do note the chapel still holds mass every Fridays at 8:30am.

The Visitor Center is newly renovated and features a new gift shop and coffee shop.
