Trail Ridge Road gets plenty of attention every autumn, but it is far from the only place to find brilliant fall colors near Estes Park. If you would rather trade busy overlooks for quieter roads, lakeside walks, and picnic spots tucked among golden aspens, there are several easy alternatives close to town.

Drive Highway 7 Toward Lily Lake

Head south from Estes Park on Highway 7, part of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. This stretch is especially rewarding in fall, with patches of glowing aspens set against darker evergreen forest.

You will also get big views toward Longs Peak, Mount Meeker, and Twin Sisters. Even if you only drive as far as Lily Lake and turn around, the scenery makes the trip worthwhile.

Walk Around Lily Lake

Lily Lake is one of the easiest places to combine autumn color with a short walk.

The roughly 0.8-mile loop circles the water with mountain views and seasonal color around the shoreline. Picnic tables near the trailhead make it easy to bring lunch and linger instead of treating the lake as a quick photo stop.

Stay Close to Town at Lake Estes

For foliage without entering Rocky Mountain National Park, head to Lake Estes.

You do not need to walk the entire paved loop. Park near the marina or visitor center and follow a short section of shoreline. Calm mornings can bring beautiful reflections, while cottonwoods and pockets of aspen add yellow to the valley.

Take the Quieter Road Through Glen Haven

For a slower fall drive, take County Road 43 toward Glen Haven. The route follows a narrow canyon where cottonwoods, aspens, rocky slopes, and evergreens create a completely different autumn scene from the high country.

It is a good choice when Trail Ridge Road feels too busy or weather has made the higher elevations less appealing.

Pack a Picnic at Upper Beaver Meadows

Inside Rocky Mountain National Park, Upper Beaver Meadows offers open valley scenery, aspens, and plenty of room to slow down.

Bring lunch, binoculars, and an extra layer. Fall weather changes quickly, even when Estes Park feels warm.
